The three marketing metrics that matter for RIAs

Most dashboards measure activity. These three measure whether the brand is actually compounding.

The short answer: the three marketing metrics that matter most for RIAs are qualified first meetings by source, the conversion rate from first meeting to client, and the number of introductions you receive from clients and centers of influence. Together they show whether the brand is bringing in the right people, persuading them, and spreading on its own.

Why most RIA dashboards miss the point

Website visits, followers, open rates, and impressions are easy to count, so they fill most dashboards. They measure activity. They do not tell you whether the firm is growing because of its brand or in spite of it.

Activity is what marketing does. Compounding is what the brand earns.

The three metrics

1. Qualified first meetings, by source

Count the first meetings with prospects who fit your ideal client, and record where each one came from: client referral, center of influence, website, content, event, or outreach. This shows whether growth is still entirely referral-driven or whether the brand is starting to open doors on its own.

2. First meeting to client conversion

Of the qualified prospects you meet, how many become clients, and how long does it take? A clear brand shortens this. Prospects arrive already understanding who you serve and why it matters, so less of the meeting is spent explaining the firm.

3. Introductions from clients and centers of influence

Track how many introductions you receive each quarter, and from whom. When the brand is easy to explain, the people who know you refer more often and describe you more accurately.

How to start tracking them

  • Add a source field to every new prospect in your CRM, and make it required.

  • Define “qualified” once, in writing, so the count means the same thing every month.

  • Log introductions as they happen, including the person who made them.

  • Review the three numbers monthly with leadership, and look at the trend over a quarter rather than any single month.

What to keep, but not lead with

Traffic, engagement, and email metrics still help diagnose why one of the three numbers moved. Use them to explain the scorecard, not to replace it.
